Cellular Phone Etiquette

Someone once said that the more available you make yourself; the more available everyone will expect you to be.

The cell phone makes us more available than ever before. Cell phone calls follow you everywhere, even into your bathroom. Even in the middle of the night, when you're sleeping, cell phones can continue to ring. Doesn't matter if it's important or something minor, the world has a direct line to you.

And in this modern society, we love it. People are talking on their cell phones in the car, in line at the grocery store, in the movie theater, over dinner ... everywhere!

Unfortunately, as a result, cell phone etiquette is becoming a lost art. We've all experienced the lack of consideration. The woman in front of you in the check out line is too busy chatting with her friend to realize her items have checked through and the clerk is waiting for payment. The businessman in the elevator talking on his cell phone as if no one else were there. The kid in the movie theater who's relaying every scene to her best friend.

So here it goes, as unpopular as it may be, a few suggestions about cell phone etiquette ...

1. If you have to talk on the cell phone while in a crowd, try to respect the person you're talking with and keep your conversation quiet and as private as possible. It's incredibly rude to assume everyone around you delights in overhearing your call.

2. Use headphones or earphones when you're driving and talking on the phone. This is common sense, plain and simple. It costs only a few extra bucks and it could very well save a life.

3. If you're going to church or a movie, a bookstore or a library, a business meeting or a community meeting, then turn off your cell phone. You won't miss anything. Your messages will still be there waiting for you once the event is over. If you're anticipating a critical call, set your cell phone to the vibrate mode and excuse yourself from the event in order to take the call.

4. Understand that when traveling by plane, you'll be required to turn off your cell phone. This is necessary because electronics devices may interfere with the aircraft’s avionics. Thus, it's a safety requirement. Please be courteous and turn off your cell phone when asked. Often for long flights, airlines will allow cell phone usage once the plane has reached its cruising altitude. That's your opportunity to make any calls you feel are necessary.

5. Try leaving your cell phone at home once in awhile. Multi-tasking isn't all it's cut out to be. Save your calls for when you can give your full attention to the other person. Don't you both deserve that much?

There's no question cell phones have become a necessity in today's world. And there's no doubt they'll continue to grow in their popularity as new uses and functions become available. So enjoy your cell phone. Use it to keep in touch with the ones you love, and for that business call you really need to make, and for making the appointment with the dentist. And use it with courtesy and consideration for the people around you.
